Alex Horne’s Comedy Football Trophy

Last Saturday (10 May), my husband and I were invited by a couple of our friends to go out to Chesham for Alex Horne’s Comedy Football Trophy match. They told us they had been a couple of years ago and it was lots of fun. We had heard about it before and thankfully, we were free for the day.

The match is basically what the title says – Alex Horne brings together a bunch of comedians and some footballers to play a football match – but with a twist! All the proceeds from the day go to various charities.

The teams playing were Chicken City and Egg United – both teams kitted out in respective colours. Nish Kumar and Aisling Bea were providing riveting commentary throughout the match and announcing any rules that needed to be followed.

Examples of the rules just to help you get an idea of the silliness:

  1. A goalscorer can convert their goal into two goals with a successful crossbar challenge.
  2. When Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus plays, two balls will be in play.
  3. When Sit Down by James plays, everyone except the keepers must sit down.
  4. One player on each team is a Traitor. At halftime, each captain must accuse one player on their own team of being a Traitor. If they get it right, they get an extra goal.
  5. Yellow gloves instead of yellow cards. Washing up for two yellow gloves.

We were rooting for Chicken City as it had my husband’s favourite John Robins and Elis James. Our friends were rooting for Egg United simply because that was the team Alex Horne was on.

Some of the action during the second half – Hugh Dennis took control!

Overall, it was a really fun afternoon out. We had some burgers and fries from one of the food stands. Only complaint was that our friends had to wait over an hour in line at one point for drinks and we heard that they ran out of ice cream five times! The weather was absolutely perfect and we managed to stay out of the sun and avoid being sunburned. It was also fun seeing a lot of familiar faces getting in on the action and taking it (maybe) a little too seriously.

Maisie Adam coming up to yell at Alex Horne for taking to long to throw it in

Egg United ended up winning in penalties, but we had fun watching John Robins score some goals and act as goalkeeper. If this continues on each year, I think we will return to Chesham to see more comedy football action!
