Fairs & Festivals: My Easter Break

For those who do did & didn’t celebrate Easter, I hope you all had a wonderful break and time with loved ones. Here in the UK, we get both Good Friday and Easter Monday off as bank holidays. This allowed us to spend some time around the house and go out to do some fun things. On Saturday & Easter Monday, I was out with my husband and a couple of our friends to a food festival and a country fair not far from where we live.

Great Missenden Food Festival

We’ve been to this food festival in the past and have really enjoyed the variety of food to choose from. Unfortunately, this year was not as great as past times. The food stands were limited and even some of our favourites weren’t around. There was still a variety to choose from in terms of food, but there was an obnoxious amount of “bar” stands.

To eat, Peter and I shared a banoffee crumble with a Biscoff topping and vegan cream, vegan poutine, ackee & saltfish with dumplings and plantain. The saltfish with the dumplings and plantain were my favourite. It was a little spicy for me, but eating the dumplings and plantain helped counteract the spice.

Ackee & Saltfish with Dumplings & Plantain – yum!

Before leaving, I picked up a cotton candy character. The elephant was my choice and it was so cute! I enjoyed watching him make it and was shocked at how much cotton candy I got for £7! He was eaten on the ride home, though it was hard to destroy such a fun creation.

Overall, I tried a good variety of food and had a nice time with friends, but as much that was lacking this year compared to previous times, it makes it hard to decide if we want to bother going again. There will be another Great Missenden Food Festival end of August around August bank holiday.

Thame Country Fair

Like the GM Food Festival, the Thame Country Fair is one that we have been to previously. It is filled with demonstrations and activities to enjoy. There is always plenty to choose from in terms of food and crafts galore. I always like seeing the falconry display and seeing the owls.

This year we watched the speed chainsaw carving, where the artists had 30 minutes to speed carve a design of their choice. At the end of the 30 minutes, the carvings were auctioned off to the audience. It was really cool seeing what was created in that short amount of time.

The weather wasn’t as nice in Thame as it was in Great Missenden a couple days before which kind of put a damper on wanting to go around – but from under my umbrella, I enjoyed watching the ponies race around the arena.

A big downside to this fair is the cost. The early bird entry price for adults is £18 – so a family is going to have to spend a chunk of change just to get in. I do think there is a lot to see for the price, but I still think it can be a little more affordable. Maybe £10 or £12 an adult?

I hope you have a lovely rest of April as we continue on with spring!

Look out for more to come!

xx Hannah
